How Much Does Damp Proofing Cost?

Damp proofing is one of the trickiest renovation-adjacent costs to estimate honestly, because the price depends almost entirely on what's actually causing the damp — and that isn't always obvious without a proper survey. This guide explains the real cost drivers so you know what to expect and what questions to ask, but it isn't a sales pitch for damp-proofing work: this is a specialist, separately-certified trade, and honest advice here matters more than steering you toward a particular treatment.

Why there's no single "damp proofing cost"

Damp has several genuinely different causes, and the right treatment — and its cost — depends entirely on which one applies:

  • Rising damp — moisture moving up through a wall from the ground, usually due to a failed or absent damp-proof course. Treatment typically involves a chemical damp-proof course injection and replastering the affected area.
  • Penetrating damp — water getting in from outside through a defect (cracked render, a failed seal around a window, a leaking gutter). Treatment fixes the actual entry point, which might be a small repair or a larger job depending on the defect.
  • Condensation — moisture from everyday living (cooking, showering, breathing) that isn't adequately ventilated. This is not actually "damp" in the structural sense and doesn't need damp-proofing treatment at all — see our guide on telling damp and condensation apart before booking anything.

Typical UK cost ranges

These are broad, general ranges — genuinely dependent on cause and extent, so treat them as a starting point for a conversation, not a quote.

  • Localised rising damp treatment (one wall/small area): roughly £300–£800
  • Rising damp treatment across a full room or larger area: roughly £1,000–£2,500
  • Penetrating damp repair: highly variable — from a modest repair (a few hundred pounds) to a larger job if the source is significant (guttering, render, roof detailing).
  • Full damp-proofing course across a property: can run into several thousand pounds, depending on size and extent.

What a proper damp survey involves

A genuine damp survey should include a visual inspection, moisture readings taken with a proper meter at various heights and locations (rising damp readings drop off with height in a characteristic pattern; condensation and penetrating damp don't), and — crucially — an explanation of the likely cause, not just a moisture percentage. Be cautious of a "survey" that consists of a quick meter reading followed immediately by a quote for treatment; a proper diagnosis takes a bit more time than that.

What to expect during treatment, and how long it takes

Chemical damp-proof course injection for a single affected wall is typically a one-day job, though the wall then needs time to dry out before replastering — often several weeks, sometimes longer for a thick or badly-affected wall, since replastering too soon traps moisture behind new plaster and the problem resurfaces. Penetrating damp repairs vary hugely by cause: resealing a window can be a half-day job, while re-rendering an external wall section is a multi-day job with its own drying time. Factor the drying period into any renovation timeline that depends on the room being finished — it's a common source of frustration when redecoration is planned too soon after treatment.

Why the diagnosis matters more than the treatment

The single most important step — more than the treatment itself — is getting the cause correctly identified. Treating condensation as if it were rising damp (or vice versa) wastes money and doesn't solve the actual problem. An independent damp survey, ideally from someone who isn't also the one selling the treatment, is the most reliable way to get an honest diagnosis before spending on a fix.

Questions worth asking before booking treatment

  • What specifically did the survey identify as the cause, and what evidence supports that (not just a moisture reading)?
  • What does the treatment actually involve, step by step?
  • How long will the affected area need to dry before it can be replastered or redecorated?
  • Is there a guarantee on the work, and what does it actually cover?

What we can genuinely help with

Damp-proofing treatment itself is outside what Carvalho Renovations does — it's a specialist, separately-certified trade. Where we can genuinely help is the general renovation work that often follows a damp diagnosis: replastering, redecorating, or wider repairs once the underlying cause has been properly treated by a specialist. See our seasonal home maintenance checklist for the general upkeep that helps prevent damp issues arising in the first place.

Frequently asked questions

It depends entirely on the cause and extent. A localised rising damp treatment to one wall might cost a few hundred pounds; a full property damp-proofing course, or work addressing penetrating damp across multiple walls, can run into several thousand. There's no single meaningful average — the diagnosis determines the treatment, and the treatment determines the cost.
