Why Is My Wood Flooring Creaking?

Creaking in a wood floor is almost always caused by friction between two surfaces that shouldn't be moving against each other — typically a floorboard rubbing against a joist, a nail or screw that's worked loose, or boards rubbing against each other. It's rarely a sign of anything structurally dangerous, but it's worth understanding the cause before deciding whether to live with it or fix it.

Loose boards rubbing against joists

Over time, the nails or screws holding floorboards to the joists beneath can work loose, especially in older properties where timber has dried out and shrunk slightly since it was originally fitted. When you step on a loosened board, it flexes slightly and rubs against the fixing or the joist, producing the creak. This is the most common cause in older suspended timber floors.

Boards rubbing against each other

Where boards have shrunk slightly (see our guide to why gaps appear between floorboards) or were never perfectly tight to begin with, adjacent boards can rub against each other under weight, particularly at the tongue-and-groove joint. This is common with engineered and solid wood floors that have gone through a few seasonal cycles.

Subfloor or joist movement

In some cases the creak comes from further down — a joist that's slightly undersized for the span, sagging over time, or moving very slightly at its bearing points. This is less common but worth having checked by a builder if creaking is widespread, gets noticeably worse, or is accompanied by any visible sagging or bounce in the floor.

How to fix a creaking floor

  • From above (without lifting the floor): specialist floor-repair screw kits let you drive a screw down through the floor and just into the joist below at an angle, pulling the board tight, with the screw head then snapped off below the surface and the hole filled.
  • From below (if you have access, e.g. an unfinished cellar or accessible joists): screwing the board to the joist from underneath, or adding a small wood shim into any gap between board and joist, is often a cleaner fix that doesn't disturb the visible floor surface at all.
  • Talcum powder or specialist lubricant: worked into a creaking joint between boards can sometimes reduce the friction noise as a low-effort, temporary measure, though it doesn't address the underlying cause.

When to call a professional

A single occasional creak is rarely worth worrying about. Widespread creaking across a whole floor, creaking accompanied by visible movement or sagging, or creaking that's got noticeably worse over a short period are all better assessed by a professional, since they can indicate a joist or subfloor issue that's more involved than a simple loose-board fix.

Tools needed for a DIY fix

A basic creaking-floor repair kit (available from most DIY retailers) typically includes specialist screws designed to snap off cleanly below the surface, along with a jig to angle the screw correctly into the joist below. You'll also need a stud/joist finder to locate the joists accurately beneath the floor before drilling, since fixing into empty space between joists won't solve anything. Wood filler to disguise the snapped-off screw hole finishes the job.

Cost of a professional repair

For a small number of creaking boards, a professional repair is usually a relatively quick, low-cost callout, especially compared with more involved flooring work. If creaking is widespread across a large area, or turns out to involve joist-level work rather than a simple board fix, costs rise accordingly — get a proper assessment before assuming it's a big job, since many creaking floor complaints turn out to be straightforward fixes.

Does furniture placement affect creaking?

Heavy furniture directly over a weak or loose spot can make creaking more noticeable simply through added weight and repeated small movements as people sit down or get up. Moving furniture slightly, or adding a rug with a good underlay over a problem area, won't fix the underlying cause but can meaningfully reduce how often the creak is triggered day to day while you plan a proper repair.

If your home has an accessible cellar, crawl space, or exposed joists in an unfinished area beneath the creaking floor, it's worth having a look yourself before booking a callout — sometimes the loose fixing or gap is visible immediately and a straightforward from-below fix can save the cost and disruption of a from-above repair through the finished floor surface.

Keeping a mental note of exactly where creaks occur, and under what circumstances, is genuinely useful information to pass on to a professional if you do call one in, since it narrows down where to start looking considerably faster than a general description alone.
