The short answer
A window that's stiff, jammed, or won't close flush is almost always caused by one of a handful of common issues: paint or dirt buildup in the frame, a misaligned or worn hinge, a swollen timber frame from moisture, or — on uPVC — a mechanism that's dropped slightly out of adjustment. Most of these are fixable without replacing the window.
Paint or debris trapping the sash
On timber windows especially, repeated repainting over the years without cleanly cutting back the paint line can build up enough thickness that the sash sticks in the frame, particularly in humid weather when timber swells slightly. Running a sharp blade along the paint line where sash meets frame, then lightly sanding, often frees a stuck window without any other work needed. On uPVC and aluminium, check the track or hinge area for a buildup of dirt, grit or old lubricant residue.
Hinges out of alignment
Over years of opening and closing, hinges can work slightly loose or the screws can wear their fixing points, letting the sash or casement drop very slightly and catch on the frame. Tightening hinge screws is a quick check; if the screw holes have worn out (common on timber), they may need re-plugging with wood filler or a slightly larger screw before they'll hold properly again.
uPVC and aluminium mechanism adjustment
Modern uPVC and aluminium casement windows use adjustable hinges (usually with a small hex/Allen key adjustment point) that let the sash be shifted slightly up, down, left or right within the frame — this is standard, expected maintenance, not a sign of a faulty window. If a uPVC window has become stiff to close or doesn't sit flush, a small hinge adjustment often resolves it in minutes. Manufacturer or supplier documentation usually shows exactly where the adjustment points are for a given hinge system.
Swollen timber from moisture
If a timber window is worse in wet weather and eases in dry weather, moisture absorption into the timber is the likely cause. This is common where the paint or stain finish has worn thin or cracked, letting water into the timber. The fix is usually to let the timber dry out, then sand and re-finish the exposed area properly — repeatedly forcing a swollen window can damage the frame or hinges.
Lock or handle mechanism faults
Sometimes the window itself moves freely but the handle or multi-point lock mechanism is what's jamming — a stiff handle, or one that turns without the lock actually engaging or disengaging, points to the mechanism rather than the window itself. These mechanisms can usually be replaced without replacing the whole window, and it's a common, inexpensive repair.
When to call a professional rather than DIY
If the frame itself has visibly warped or cracked, if the problem affects multiple windows at once (which can indicate a wider issue with the property, such as subsidence-related movement — worth having checked rather than assumed), or if you're not confident working with the mechanism, it's worth calling a glazier or your original installer rather than forcing anything, since forcing a jammed window can damage the frame, glass or hardware.
Common mistakes
- Forcing a stuck window. This risks cracking the frame or glass, or breaking the hinge — stop and diagnose the cause first.
- Over-lubricating a mechanism. A light silicone-based lubricant (not household oil, which attracts dirt) on hinges and locks is usually enough — too much can attract grit and make things worse.
- Ignoring a window that's only slightly stiff. Minor sticking tends to get worse, not better, over subsequent seasons of expansion and contraction.
If the problem keeps coming back
A window that repeatedly needs re-adjusting despite proper fixes may be nearing the end of its serviceable life, or there may be a structural cause worth investigating.
