uPVC vs aluminium bifolds
uPVC bifolds are the budget option and have improved significantly in recent years, but the frames are inherently chunkier than aluminium to achieve equivalent strength, meaning less visible glass per panel. Aluminium is the default choice where a genuinely slim, contemporary look matters — most of the bifold doors seen in extension "after" photos in magazines and on renovation shows are aluminium, specifically because the sightlines are so much narrower. For a budget-conscious project where the doors aren't the visual centrepiece, uPVC remains a sensible option.
Number of panels and configuration
Bifold sets are typically specified as, for example, "3+0" (three panels all folding one way) or "2+1" (two panels folding one way, one the other, often used to create a wider single opening without all panels stacking on one side). More panels generally mean a smoother, slimmer stack when open, but also more hinges and moving parts — which is part of why panel count affects price more than raw width alone.
Installation costs and what's included
Quotes should specify whether they include: removal and disposal of the existing door/wall opening, any structural work (a lintel or steel beam if the opening is being widened — this is a separate, often significant cost if a wall is being opened up rather than an existing door replaced like-for-like), making good internally and externally around the new frame, and the door furniture (handles, locking points). Get a detailed, itemised quote rather than a single headline figure, so you can compare like-for-like across suppliers.
Widening an opening vs replacing an existing door
If you're replacing an existing patio door or French doors with bifolds in the same opening, the job is comparatively straightforward. If you're widening the opening — common when converting a standard rear door into a full-width bifold set as part of a kitchen extension — that's structural work requiring a suitably sized steel lintel or beam, calculated by a structural engineer, and this can add anywhere from a few hundred to a few thousand pounds depending on the span and any load above it. This work also falls under Building Regulations separately from the door installation itself.
Ongoing running costs
Bifold tracks need to be kept clean and free of debris (grit, leaves, sand from a nearby patio) to keep rollers running smoothly — this is genuinely lower-effort than it sounds, but neglecting it for years can lead to a stiff or noisy door and, eventually, roller wear that needs replacing. Otherwise, bifolds are low-maintenance in the same way other modern uPVC or aluminium doors are.
Common mistakes
- Comparing quotes without checking the spec is identical. Panel count, glazing spec, threshold type and installation scope can all vary between quotes even for a similarly priced set — compare like-for-like.
- Forgetting the structural cost when widening an opening. Get a structural engineer's input (or ask your installer whether one is included) before you commit to a headline door price that doesn't include the wall opening.
